June 2008 The Summer Solstice is approaching

In the northern hemisphere the sun does not go under the horizon at all. Here you see my photograph “Night Sun” taken at midnight on my way to Kilpisjärvi on 30th May.Kilpisjärvi is the coldest place in Finland. The lake Kilpisjärvi was still in ice.

The Night Sun

A Bio Art seminar was held in Kilpisjärvi Biological Station. Here you see the location http://www.helsinki.fi/kilpis/english/index.htm

I was lucky — I could fasten my pinhole cameras on the roof of can assistant Rauni´s house face the sun. I like to catch the whole midnight sun. Skibotn, about 50 km far from Kilpisjärvi, is in Norway and I saw the sea, too. The Gold stream has its influence on the climate. There are pine trees and new green leaves were bursting in deciduous trees in those days. The summer was coming there. I left some my pinhole cans for exposing there, too.

But now the summer solstice is approaching and it is time to pick up the old pinhole cameras and to replace with new ones. I checked solstices on the Net. The right day is June on 20th 23:59

Solstices occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is oriented directly towards or away from the Sun, causing the Sun to reach its northernmost and southernmost extremes. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, its apparent movement north or south comes to a standstill. The Digital SLR user Magazine May 2008 Issue No. 19 published an interview “SLOW COOKER Ever wondered what a six-month long exposure might look like? ...”
New can assistants are willing to take part in the project. All of you are welcome to start solargraphing.
